Strategies to improve the effect of mesenchymal stem cell therapy on inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and is an idiopathic, chronic inflammatory disease of the colonic mucosa. The occurrence of IBD, causes irreversible damage to the colon and increases the risk of carcinoma. The routine clinical treatment of IBD includes drug treatment, endoscopic treatment and surgery. The vast majority of patients are treated with drugs and biological agents, but the complete cure of IBD is difficult. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have become a … Show more

“…The mechanism of action most likely differs between species and are affected by a variety of factors such as culture conditions or an inflammatory environment [33]. Adaptive immune cells (T and B lymphocytes) and innate immune cells (macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, natural killer cells, and natural killer T cells) phenotype and function are both influenced by MSCs [77,[79][80][81]. MSCs' anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and immunosuppressive capabilities serve as the foundation for their therapeutic use.…”

“…MSCs have been shown to improve the medical conditions of a variety of immune-mediated diseases, including graft rejection, graft-versus-host disease, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythromatosis, Crohn’s disease, colitis, osteoarthritis, multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), and psoriasis [ 467 , 468 , 469 , 470 , 471 , 472 , 473 , 474 , 475 ]. Moreover, MSCs can promote wound healing and tissue regeneration [ 404 , 476 , 477 , 478 ].…”
