“…One possibility is that these sediments were deposited in the sub‐tidal domain of a large bay (possibly the incipient palaeo‐Gulf of Cambay; Fig. ), where wave energy was subdued due to the presence of distal sand bars at the mouth of the bay (Dalrymple et al ., ; Nio & Yang, ; MacEachern & Bann, ; Antia et al ., ; Kieft et al ., ). Such distal bars, away from the present‐day coastline of Gulf of Cambay, are also accreting at the mouth of modern bay.…”

“…Measured sections at Tadkeswar, Vastan and Valia show dominant grey shale, grey shale with silt/fine sand intercalations, occasional lignite/carbonaceous shale and fossiliferous grey shale. These features indicate that the sediment belonging to this facies association deposited in an estuarine environment in the eastern part of the basin, while in the western part it possibly deposited away from the estuarine front in a sub‐tidal domain of the bay (Yang et al ., ; Finzel et al ., ; Antia et al ., ; Kieft et al ., ). An increasing amount of sand up in the sections indicates that a permanent supply of the sand was probably established by this time.…”

“…Numerous studies document the preferential development and preservation of tidally influenced deposits in net-transgressive strata (e.g. Nio & Yang 1991;Sixsmith et al 2008;Kieft et al 2011). …”
