For sequence stratigraphic analysis of extensive carbonate platforms (hundreds of kilometres wide) developed in greenhouse climates on broad, passive margins, less emphasis should be placed on large-scale seismic geometries, and more attention paid to sequence stratigraphic correlation of stratigraphic sections based usually on isolated outcrops.To this end, quantitative analysis of accommodation emerges as a simple, useful tool, that allows detailed architectural reconstructions, regional chronostratigraphical correlation and systems tract interpretation. In this paper, a quantitative analysis of accommodation was applied to the wide platforms that developed in the southern passive continental margin of Iberia during the mid-Cretaceous (late Albian to early middle Cenomanian interval).This analysis was based on several integrated techniques including: (I) construction of total accommodation curves with the aid of backs tripping techniques for calculating decompacted sedimentary accumulation through time, (2) mathematical analysis of these curves and characterisation of second-and third-order accommodation patterns, and (3) analysis of parasequence stacking patterns in peritidal cyclic successions by means of Fischer plots. By applying these techniques to eight individual sections logged at the decimetre scale in outcrops of the External Zones of the Betic orogenic belt, it was possible to characterise the second-and third-order accommodation signal for this interval in the basin. The second-order curve defines a long-term sigmoidal pattern of nearly six million years, with low rates of accommodation generation in the first and the last part of the interval, and high rates in the mid-interval. The third-order signal defines six accommodation events of one million years average duration, which controlled the development of six successive depositional sequences and their systems tracts. On the basis of this new sequence stratigraphic framework, a high-resolution, 2-D platform transect, showing the spatial distribution of facies, was erected and analysed. The results notably complete previous qualitative sequence stratigraphic data on the platform and contribute to a better understanding of the nature of systems tracts and their boundaries in response to overlapping of second-and third-order accommodation patterns.

ABSTRACT. Rudist bivalves are described from two Upper Aptian±Albian sections in northern Sinai, Egypt. Independent stratigraphical evidence is provided by orbitolinid foraminifera and sequence stratigraphic correlation with other, ammonite-bearing sections of the region. With the exception of Eoradiolites liratus (Conrad) and Sellaea, this is the ®rst record of Lower Cretaceous rudists from Egypt. A rather continuous occurrence of rudists is recorded in the more open marine deposit at Rizan Aneiza, but they occur only in the Middle±Upper Albian at Gebel Raghawi to the south-west. In the uppermost Aptian to basal Middle Albian at Rizan Aneiza, the succession of Eoradiolites plicatus±E. murgensis±E. liratus is interpreted as a lineage of chronospecies. Of particular interest is the presence of canaliculate rudists in the Upper Albian of both sections, as there exists a large gap, spanning the Upper Aptian and most parts of the Albian, in the fossil record of the Caprininae d'Orbigny. Neocaprina raghawiensis sp. nov. and Neocaprina? sp. are recognized as ancestors of Cenomanian species of Neocaprina Plenic Ïar and Caprinula d'Orbigny. The inclusion of these genera in the Caprininae d'Orbigny is questioned and the phylogenetic descent from an unidenti®ed Albian taxon with well-developed myophoral cavities is suggested.

Abstract:The production of platform carbonates of the Manín Unit (Manín Straits, Central Western Carpathians) belonging to the Podhorie and Manín formations and formed by remains of rudists and benthic foraminifers (Urgonian-type carbonates), was previously assumed to terminate during the Aptian. First, we show that these deposits were primarily formed on the upper slope (Podhorie Formation) and in a fore-reef environment (Manín Formation). Second, biostratigraphic data indicate that the shallow-water production persisted up to the Albian, just as it did in another succession of the Manín Unit. The Podhorie Fm contains colomiellids (Colomiella recta, C. mexicana) and calcareous dinoflagellates (Calcisphaerula innominata) that indicate the Albian age. It also contains planktonic foraminifers (Ticinella roberti, Ticinella cf. primula, Ticinella cf. madecassiana, Ticinella cf. praeticinensis) of the Albian Ticinella primula Zone. The Podhorie Formation passes upwards into peri-reefal facies of the Manín Fm where we designate the Malý Manín Member on the basis of rudists shell fragments and redeposited orbitolinids. Microfacies associations share similarities with the Urgonian-type microfacies from Mediterranean Tethys and allow us to restrict the growth and the demise of the carbonate platform. δ 13 C and δ 18 O isotopes change over a broad range of both formations: δ 13C is in the range +1.03 to +4.20 ‰ V-PDB and δ 18O is in the range −0.14 to −5.55 ‰ V-PDB. Although a close correlation between δ 13 C and δ 18 O indicates diagenetic overprint, a long-term increase of δ 13C can indicate a gradual increase in the aragonite production and/or increasing effects of oceanic water masses in the course of the Albian, prior to the final platform drowning. Carbonate platform evolution was connected with submarine slumps and debris flows leading to redeposition and accumulation of carbonate lithoclasts and bioclastic debris on the slope. Our study confirms that the growth of carbonate platforms in the Central Western Carpathians was stopped and the platform collapsed during the Albian, in contrast to the westernmost Tethys. A hardground formed during the Late Albian is overlain by Albian -Cenomanian marls of the Butkov Formation with calcisphaerulid limestones characterized by planktonic foraminifers of the Parathalmanninella appenninica Zone and calcareous dinoflagellates of the Innominata Acme Zone.
