Stratospheric loss and atmospheric lifetimes of CFC-11 and CFC-12 derived from satellite observations

Abstract: The lifetimes of CFC-11 and CFC-12 have been evaluated using global observations of their stratospheric distributions from satellite-based instruments over the time period from 1992 to 2010. The chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) datasets are from the Cryogen Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES), the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA-1 and CRISTA-2), the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), and the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE). Stratosphe… Show more

“…[], the lifetime was estimated to be 54 and 57 years, using a 3‐D and a 2‐D atmospheric chemistry model, respectively. Recent studies based on satellite and ground‐based observations have estimated a CFC‐11 lifetime of 50 years (range: 34–67 years) [ Minschwaner et al ., ], 52 years (range: 40–66 years) [ Rigby et al ., ], and 59 years (range: 53–66 years) [ Laube et al ., ]. In Table , we choose to keep the lifetime of 45 years from WMO [] as our best estimate.…”

“…Previous results on the validation of different data products for these gases have been published (Payan et al, 2009;Hoffmann et al, 2008;Kellmann et al, 2012;Vigouroux et al, 2007), and the data have been used, for example, to derive stratospheric lifetimes Minschwaner et al, 2013) and climatologies and trends of CFC-11 and CFC-12 (Kellmann et al, 2012). While MIPAS is not operating anymore, it has provided a wealth of data that span nearly 10 years.…”

“…They are known as ozone-depleting compounds with atmospheric lifetimes between 90 and 130 years (Minschwaner et al, 2013). Production began in the late 1920s and was phased out in the late 1980s due to the infrared-mediated detrimental impact on atmospheric ozone concentrations.…”
