STRAW (STRings for Absorption length in Water): pathfinder for a neutrino telescope in the deep Pacific Ocean

Abstract: The instrumentation for a pathfinder mission towards a possible large scale neutrino telescope named "STRings for Absorption length in Water" (STRAW) is presented in terms of design and performance. In June 2018 STRAW was deployed at the Cascadia Basin site operated by Ocean Networks Canada and has been collecting data since then. At a depth of about 2600 meters, the two STRAW 120 meters tall mooring lines are instrumented by three "Precision Optical Calibration Modules" (POCAM) and five Digital Optical Sensor… Show more

“…with χ 2 min the χ 2 of the best-fit realisation. The scale factor S = 1/ χ 2 min /ndf, where ndf the number of free parameters of the fit, is an approximate correction (Rosenfeld 1975) to enlarge the uncertainty because of a poor minimum χ 2 that might either signify underestimated experimental uncertainties or simplified model assumptions. Equation 27, defines the confidence regions illustrated in Figure 7 in units of standard deviations.…”

“…The latter will cause a bipolar swing of the pulse and thus effectively cuts it short. With this technique and selected LED-types of 365, 405, 465 and 605 nm, we achieved FWHMs of 4 − 8 ns with intensities ranging from 10 6 − 10 9 photons per pulse which is linear with supply voltage [1,10]. However, the performance of the driver is highly dependent on the used type of LED and requires a proper selection process.…”

“…The Precision Optical Calibration Module (POCAM) [1] [2][3] is a self-calibrating lightemitter device for the in-situ calibration of large-volume neutrino detectors. Its primary goals are the reduction and better understanding of systematic experimental uncertainties within the detector -most notably the properties of the optical detection medium as well as efficiency and angular acceptance of the photosensor instrumentation.…”
