Strength and Ductility of Embedded Steel Composite Coupling Beams

Abstract: The stringent requirements on dimensions, ductility, energy absorption, strength and stiffness of coupling beams have resulted in much research on various alternative coupling beam designs, which include the use of diagonal reinforcement, rhombic arrangement of main bars and steel composites. Experimental results showed that each of these designs offered better performance than the conventional type but had its own limitations. A new embedded steel composite coupling beam design is therefore proposed. This pap… Show more

“…Some of the experimental results on the medium-length coupling beams have been presented in previous publications [11][12][13][14][15][16]. The results demonstrated the improved performance of PRC coupling beams over that of conventional RC coupling beams under both elastic loading and inelastic imposed deformations.…”

“…By embedding a steel plate of thickness about one tenth of the beam width into an RC coupling beam with conventional reinforcement, the strength was almost doubled and the total energy dissipated almost tripled [16]. The importance of shear studs, especially in the wall anchorage regions of the plate, on the seismic performance of a PRC coupling beam has also been recognized [12,14].…”

“…However, the seismic behavior of concrete link beams is poor in most cases, as illustrated in Figure 19. Therefore, many researchers devoted to improving the seismic performance of concrete coupling beams (Paulay 1986;Lam et al 2003) or bringing forward other alternatives (Paulay el al. 1974;Harries et al 1992;Gong et al 2001).…”

“…Recently, Lam et al. [7][8] proposed to enhance the deformation and ductility capacities of RC coupling beams by utilizing the composite action between steel plate and RC. However, their suggestion of embedding a steel plate in a RC coupling beam could only be used in new constructions.…”
