Strength of Crowd (SOC)—Defeating a Reactive Jammer in IoT with Decoy Messages

Abstract: We propose Strength of Crowd (SoC), a distributed Internet of Things (IoT) protocol that guarantees message broadcast from an initiator to all network nodes in the presence of either a reactive or a proactive jammer, that targets a variable portion of the radio spectrum. SoC exploits a simple, yet innovative and effective idea: nodes not (currently) involved in the broadcast process transmit decoy messages that cannot be distinguished (by the jammer) from the real ones. Therefore, the jammer has to implement a… Show more

“…Compared to the other solutions available in the literature, BitTransfer is characterized by significant energy consumption. For instance, in the recent contribution [29], considering the same hardware platform used for our paper, we experimentally measured overall energy consumption in the range [0.12 − 0.16]% of the battery. In our case, Bit-Transfer requires 1.74% of the available energy.…”

“…The authors in [29] introduced Strength of Crowd (SoC), a distributed protocol that allows evading reactive jamming by transmitting decoy messages, exhausting the jamming resources of the attacker. However, the attacker model assumed in this work can jam only a fraction of the available spectrum.…”

“…The power consumption can be reduced at the node architectural level by choosing the hardware and software. Integrating the System on Chip (SoC) circuit into WSNs is a promising solution to reduce the power consumption by using HW/SW partitioning [85]. So, the most time-consuming function or complex algorithms such as video or image processing are performed with the hardware.…”

“…Several classes of jammers have been proposed in the scientific literature throughout the last years [87]. Jammers can be constant [88], random [89], deceptive [90], reactive [91], [92], spot [93], sweep [94] and barrage [95], to name a few. The effectiveness of a jammer strictly depends on the communication parameters [96] set by both the transmitter and the receiver [97].…”
