Strength of precast concrete shear joints reinforced with high-strength wire ropes

Abstract: 2 3This paper concerns the in-plane shear strength of connections between precast concrete wall elements reinforced with looped high-strength wire ropes. The looped wire ropes are pre-installed in so-called 'wire boxes' which function as shear keys. Although only a small amount of research on the shear strength of such connections can be found in the literature, this type of connection is increasingly being used because wire ropes are much more constructionfriendly than traditional U-bars. A rigid plastic uppe… Show more

“…To eliminate the clashing of joint reinforcement, construction‐friendly reinforcement configuration was also studied . Also, the behavior of T‐connection (connection between exterior and interior wall panels) between precast panels were studied using U‐bars by Rossley et al and commercially available loop boxes by Jorgensen et al…”

“…Therefore, it is proposed to design the wire ropes as strong links to avoid such mode of failure. However, the load-carrying capacity of the joint will in this way be governed by yielding of the lock bar in combination with crushing of the joint mortar [4]. This design approach will ensure a warning of failure, especially if the mortar is confined.…”

“…The method for calculating the strength of keyed joints on wire rope loops by a variational method in the theory of concrete plasticity is proposed. This takes into account the proposals [6,7] regarding the determination of the stresses rate that act in wire rope loops in the stage of the joints destruction. Suggestions for resizing a tin box (key) are made.…”
