Strength of recommendation for single‐visit root canal treatment: grading the body of the evidence using a patient‐centred approach

Abstract: There is B-level (mid-level) evidence to confirm there is no difference between the two different treatments, based on research addressing clinical outcomes and using some consistent but limited-quality methods of scientific investigation. More studies focused on evaluating patient-centred outcomes are urgently required.

“…Intracanal medicaments have conventionally been recommended as root canal dressing between appointments. However, with the increasing trend towards single visit endodontics, and the lack of a clear advantage of multiple visit treatments over single visit [ 127 , 128 , 129 ], the role of inter-appointment dressings is questionable and may wane with time. Nevertheless, considering the present evidence base (or lack of, thereof) to support one approach over the other, this section will briefly focus on the role of intracanal medicaments in root canal disinfection.…”

“…A number of reviews have compared single-visit versus multiple-visit root canal treatment. 3 5–8 Some of these are outdated, 3 6 others investigate only short-term pain as outcome, 5 again others build on evidence beyond controlled trials like cohort studies or expert opinions, 7 or pooled short-term and long-term outcomes, which does not allow to weigh them against each other. 8 The present review aimed to comprehensively compare the currently available controlled trial data on short-term and long-term complications of single-visit versus multiple-visit root canal treatment.…”

“…In this context, the simplicity of the SORT system is very welcome and can be regarded as a consequence of the major dichotomy (disease-oriented versus patient-oriented evidence) proposed by the system (9). Patient-oriented evidence that matters (POEM) allows clinicians to filter relevant information from the medical literature and focus only on what is indeed important for the patient (45). Disease-oriented evidence (DOE) includes intermediate, histopathological, physiological, or surrogate endpoints, such as probing depth reduction and x-ray changes in bone density, which may or may not reflect real improvement in patient outcomes (44).…”
