Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire: Psychometric Properties and Normative Data for Spanish 5- to 17-Year-Olds

Abstract: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) has been extensively used to measure common forms of psychopathology among children and adolescents. However, its psychometric properties vary across countries and several controversial issues warrant further investigation. This study aimed to evaluate whether the Spanish version of the SDQ is a reliable and valid tool for assessing emotional and behavioral problems in a sample of 6,775 students aged 5 to 17 years, as rated by parents, teachers, and youth. “…The items on the first four scales provide a total difficulties score (0.89). The questionnaire has demonstrated acceptable concurrent and discriminating validity in Spanish samples [ 13 ]. The questionnaire was completed by the parents after lockdown (named afterwards post-COVID-19) and the previous year, when adolescents were 12 years-old (named afterwards pre-COVID-19).…”

“…Invariance was explored contrasting the two procedures under the best factorial model obtained in the previous confirmatory section across NBACE versions, home-to-home ( n = 338) and confirmatory face-to-face ( n = 2,402) groups, imposing the same constraints to the two procedures in its parameters and in a hierarchical way. Thus, configural, metric and scalar invariance were assessed [ 54 ]. The first step was to test configural invariance, establishing a baseline model.…”

“…This study used the reported version for parents, which has an internal consistency of.58 to.80 (Español-Martín et al, 2020). The scales established were followed with cutoff points at the 80th percentile for subclinical and 90th for clinical ranges, except for the prosocial behavior subscale, which is at the 10th and 20th percentile, respectively (Español-Martín et al, 2020). Internal consistency in this study was a Cronbach's alpha of.74 for the total score.…”
