Strengths and weaknesses of the Net-Map tool for participatory social network analysis in resource management: Experience from case studies conducted on four continents

Abstract: For researchers, conducting face-to-face interviews is always a challenge as it often turns into a one-way directed information retrieval. Therefore, interviewees not always are very motivated, enthusiastic and cooperative in responding to the questions. In the end, this has implications for the quality of the interview data. To improve the interview setting and the resulting data, in several projects the Net-Map tool was used to conduct participatory social network analysis. The tool is a combination of indep… Show more

“…In using a participatory network mapping approach to the creation of ego networks for social network analysis, one must first be clear on one's intentions. While aggregated, interview-based approaches using the Net-map toolkit have been undertaken (Schröter et al 2018b), within this research intervention the approach taken was guided by the principles of participatory action research, building upon previous discussions concerning participatory (Brown and Eckold 2019). This is beneficial as a process for inclusive participation to achieving just transitions.…”

“…Thus, sample sizes tend to be small to support a single case study in detail (Bryman, 2016; Metelerkamp et al, 2020). Case‐specific challenges observed in the different stages of Net‐Map interviews in Costa Rica, Germany, Tanzania, and China are described by Schröter et al (2018).…”

“…In conventional social network analysis approaches, data are collected and analysed quantitatively, based on individual responses from actors who map out their own ties to other actors in a given network. This makes it difficult to 'tease out' the underlying reasons for complex and dynamic structures (Schröter et al 2018;Reed 2009). By contrast, Net-Map builds on an on-site network visualisation by drawing networks with the interviewees to facilitate the exploration of networks and their associated meanings.…”

“…By contrast, Net-Map builds on an on-site network visualisation by drawing networks with the interviewees to facilitate the exploration of networks and their associated meanings. While this comes at the expense of limited participants, results are improved by negotiating among participants which further allows for participant learning (Schiffer and Hauck 2010;Schröter et al 2018;Hauck et al 2015). The process of data collection and analysis was done in a sequential process in the period from August 2018 to November 2019 ( Fig.…”
