Stress analysis on the free-end distal extension of an implant-supported mandibular complete denture

Abstract: A comparative and qualitative analysis of the tensions generated in the cantilever region of an implant-supported mandibular complete denture was conducted using the three-dimensional finite element method. The mechanical properties of the components were input in the model and a load of 15 N was applied in pre-determined points. In the first simulation, the load was applied on the occlusal surface of the first premolar. In the second simulation, it was applied on the first and second premolars. In the third s… Show more

“…Compared to other in vitro methodologies, FEA produces results not only for a surface (photoelastic) but also for a punctual area (strain gauge), 19,20 being the only method to show the strain distribution inside the bone tissue, as commonly used. 21,22,23,24 To examine FEA results on implants, von Mises criteria was chosen to observe the regions with higher stress concentration. 25 To the best of the author's knowledge, there are no studies available in the literature associating implantoplasty and different heights of exposed implants.…”

“…It was reported that in cantilevered prostheses, when a vertical load is applied on cantilevered FPDs, the most-distal implants represent a fulcrum, thus creating a class I lever system, which dramatically alters the magnitudes of the forces. 24,25 Studies demonstrated that stress values in the bone depend on both the framework and veneer materials. When findings from this study were analyzed, it was seen that the stress levels in the bone around the implants were lower in the models that used the FRC and particulate composite compared with those with a metal framework and porcelain veneer.…”

“…In general, every in vitro wear test setup has to face the limitations due to the enormous amount of different aspects affecting the in vivo wear processes 14,15,18,19,21,25,28 . The simulation is used to examine two different material combinations under defined conditions regarding one considerable aspect, in this study the wear stability.…”
