Stress and Learning in Pupils: Neuroscience Evidence and its Relevance for Teachers

Abstract: Our understanding of how stress affects primary school children's attention and learning has developed rapidly. We know that children experience differing levels of stressors (factors that cause stress) in their environments, and that this can influence how they respond to new stressors when they occur in educational contexts. Here, we review evidence showing that stress can increase children's attention and learning capacities in some circumstances but hinder them in others. We show how children differ in the… Show more

“…Still, too much or too little stress is associated with impairment of the learning process. At high stress, children have difficulties with voluntarily controlling their attention, are easily distracted and, due to reduced inhibitory control, are also more inclined to habitual behaviors and indiscipline [ 36 ]. However, education in a natural environment could provide several opportunities to brighten up the lessons, lower overall stress levels, allow students to experience a sense of achievement, and give practical meaning to the topics discussed.…”

“…Finally, KoS recognizes learners' different attitudes, motivational levels, confidence, and abilities to use different cognitive and metacognitive strategies (Goldman, 2009). Neurophysiologically, low amounts of stress hormones produce motivation whereas high levels prevent learning by inhibiting synaptic plasticity , the change that occurs in the connections between neurons during learning (Whiting, Wass, Green, & Thomas, 2021). Pedagogically, this translates into designing appropriate activities to challenge but not overwhelm students.…”

“…Moreover, many may be experiencing post migration living difficulties (PMLD) and may need mental health services to help lower stress and anxiety (Chiess, et al, 2021). Stress has been shown to impact memory and learning (Whiting et al, 2021;Willis, 2014), and thereby may make it more difficult to learn a new language. Access to resources to aid in lowering stress can help improve this situation.…”
