Stress and Obesity: Are There More Susceptible Individuals?

Abstract: Purpose of ReviewStress has long been suspected to be interrelated to (abdominal) obesity. However, interindividual differences in this complex relationship exist. We suggest that the extent of glucocorticoid action partly explains these interindividual differences. We provide latest insights with respect to multiple types of stressors.Recent FindingsIncreased long-term cortisol levels, as measured in scalp hair, are strongly related to abdominal obesity and to specific mental disorders. However, not all obese… Show more

“…Disturbances in the body weight are often described in response to acute or chronic stress as well as to CORT treatment (for review, see: Harris, 2015;van der Valk et al, 2018). We observed a significant increase in the body weight of all mice but interestingly not in the group of NPSR−/− mice treated with 5 mg/kg CORT, i.e., the only group that expressed a generalized fear memory and decreased startle response.…”

“…Cortisol is known to encourage redistribution of adipose tissue to the abdominal region and to increase appetite with a preference for energy-dense food [33]. Unfortunately, many factors in modern society, such as poor sleeping patterns and chronic stress, can directly influence the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal axis, and thereby contribute to metabolic disease [33]. Interestingly, vestibular stimulation is reported to exert positive influence on salivary cortisol levels in adults, infants and animals [34][35][36][37].…”

“…Emotional eating merupakan perilaku makan sebagai respon akibat tekanan dan dapat berdampak terhadap peningkatan asupan makan (overeating) atau penurunan asupan makan (undereating). Kondisi undereating dapat terjadi pada keadaan stres awal di mana kelenjar adrenal menghasilkan hormon adrenalin yang menekan nafsu makan (24). Sesuai dengan teori ini, responden mengaku cenderung tidak nafsu makan ketika merasakan emosi negatif.…”
