Stress–Strain Curve and Carbonation Resistance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete after Using Different RCA Treatment Techniques

Abstract: Five recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) treatment techniques including flow-through carbonation, pressurized carbonation, wet carbonation, nano silica (NS) pre-spraying and combined pressurized carbonation with NS pre-spraying, were utilized to improve the performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The characteristics of the stress–strain curves of RACs including peak stress, peak strain, elastic modulus, ultimate strain and toughness were evaluated after using the above RCA treatment techniques. “…Several authors [46][47][48][49]55,58,[60][61][62][63] described the improved microstructure of mineral carbonated RCA. The reduction in porosity was confirmed in both the attached mortar and the old ITZ and reflected in an overall increased performance [54,[64][65][66]. Specifically, improved carbonation Some of the treatments to remove adhered mortar are mechanical grinding [40,41], ultrasonic bathing with a large amount of water [42], or partial dissolution in acid [43].…”

“…Several authors [ 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 55 , 58 , 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 ] described the improved microstructure of mineral carbonated RCA. The reduction in porosity was confirmed in both the attached mortar and the old ITZ and reflected in an overall increased performance [ 54 , 64 , 65 , 66 ]. Specifically, improved carbonation performance was reported, with reductions of 28.68 and 45.33% in the carbonation depth at 28 [ 63 , 67 ] and 56 days [ 63 , 68 ], respectively, for 100% replacement of NA by carbonated RCA compared to the use of uncarbonated RCA.…”
