Stress urinary incontinence 3 years after pregnancy: correlation to mode of delivery and parity

Abstract: The aim was to estimate the incidence of stress urinary incontinence 3 years after delivery and its correlation to mode of delivery and parity. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted with 120 women at the Antenatal Clinic at the State University of Campinas. There was a significant difference in the incidence of postpartum stress urinary incontinence (SUI) among patients with SUI during pregnancy (p > 0.0001). Women that were asymptomatic during pregnancy and had vaginal delivery developed SUI 2.4 times mor… Show more

“…This study showed a significant rise in UI amongst women who have vaginal deliveries (OR: 6.7, 95%CI: 1.2-36.8). This finding was supported by other studies which showed 2 to 3 fold increase of SUI in women who delivered vaginally [21,22]. Viktrup et al found that the prevalence of SUI, 12 years after first delivery was 42% while the cesarean section during first delivery was associated with a significantly lower risk of SUI [19].…”

“…It has been assumed that cesarean section delivery protects against urinary incontinence, and several studies on postpartum and general populations have confirmed this association. However, Herrmann et al 24 found no significant correlation between the incidence of stress urinary incontinence and the mode of delivery.…”

“…Furthermore, when the number of women reporting SUI within the first 4 months was compared to those greater than 4 months postpartum, there were few differences in prevalence between the two time periods; 10 of 16 studies in their review reported differences in prevalence of 3% or less between the two time periods. Others have reported that postpartum SUI is increased in women with SUI during pregnancy, even up to 3 years after delivery [28].…”

“…In postpartum women, UI is almost always SUI and is reported by 15% to 30% of women during the postpartum year [4••]. Vaginal delivery appears to incur a greater risk of postpartum SUI than cesarean-section delivery (2.4-times greater risk in previously asymptomatic women) [28].…”
