Abstract

Stressful breastfeeding and interaction: an interview study of mothers' experiencesBackground: Mothers take many steps to succeed with breastfeeding. Underestimating a stressful breastfeeding situation may give mothers distance to the child, and the child who perceives the quality of care may also show signs of stress.Objective: To explore how women experience stressful breastfeeding and then experience the interaction with their child. Method:We conducted 12 individual interviews, which were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Results:We identified four categories that described the mothers' experiences: Expectation, the difficult period, the transition and the good period. The study showed that a stressed breastfeeding situation affected the interaction both during and between meals. To meet the child›s needs and create a good relationship, breastfeeding ended. The mothers wanted information about alternatives to breastfeeding and needed support when they gave infant formula in a bottle. Conclusions:Mothers had expectations of having a good relationship with the child and succeeding with breastfeeding. When this is complicated, they need adjusted support and guidance to make healthpromoting choices. Awareness of guidance regarding breastfeeding and bottle feeding can help to open up alternatives to breastfeeding. A relaxed breastfeeding situation is important because it represents both feeding and a significant interaction situation.
