“…[Insert Table 1] Some intrapersonal emotion regulation strategies are typically considered adaptive because their mastery and implementation is associated with greater wellbeing and improved performance across numerous domains (Gross, 2015;McRae, Jacobs, Ray, John, & Gross, 2012;Southward, Altenburger, Moss, Cregg, & Cheavens, 2018). Generally, those high on extraversion and conscientiousnessand to a lesser extent agreeableness and opennessuse adaptive strategies more often (Ng & Diener, 2009;Southward et al, 2018).…”

Generally, those high on extraversion and conscientiousnessand to a lesser extent agreeableness and opennessuse adaptive strategies more often (Ng & Diener, 2009;Southward et al, 2018). However, those high in openness face some regulatory difficulties because they tend to ruminate (Amiri & Navab, 2018) and those high in neuroticism use maladaptive strategies, lack persistence in their regulatory efforts, and try many strategies when not receiving immediate gains (Southward et al, 2018), which results in less time repairing negative moods or savoring positive moods (Amiri & Navab, 2018).…”

“…The primary aim of the current study was to determine the degree of consensus among practicing psychotherapists and trainees providing therapy regarding the effectiveness of relatively well-researched emotion regulation strategies. We first assessed which single emotion regulation strategy, of ten options drawn from the literature (Southward et al, 2018), therapists and trainees believed would be most effective in eleven different scenarios. Second, we asked therapists to rate how effective each emotion regulation strategy would be in improving patients' mood in each scenario.…”

“…These vignettes describe a range of situations including interpersonal stressors (e.g., a fight with a romantic partner; not being invited to a gathering of new friends), academic stressors (e.g., being accused of cheating on a test; failing a midterm), financial stressors (e.g., waiting on a loan), and physical illness stressors (e.g., developing mononucleosis). All aspects of the vignettes were retained from Southward et al (2018), except the vignettes in the current study were written from the third-person perspective to describe hypothetical situations participants' patients were experiencing.…”
