Stretch‐Safe: Magnetic Connectors for Modular Stretchable Electronics

Abstract: Wearable healthcare devices monitor the condition of patients outside the hospital and hence increase treatment capacity and resources. At the same time, patients benefit from wireless data transmission and conformable device designs, speeding up the rehabilitation process and integration into normal daily activities. Yet, the successful implementation of personalized treatment creates an extensive engineering challenge as devices need to adapt to a vast number of different patients and treatment protocols. He… Show more

“…The finite element method (FEM) for FEA has proven to be a powerful tool in analyzing the mechanical properties of various flexible devices. [36,[65][66][67][68] To get a deeper understanding of strain and stress values on the supercapacitor during a radial deformation, we have performed numerical simulations of representative parts of the μSC (Figure 4a) a COMSOL software package. [69] In the case of radial deformation in layered structures, strains can be described by the concept of a neutral plane.…”

“…Highly compliant electroreceptors found in elasmobranch fishes inspired us to build a SAER consisting of soft conductors and insulators. This facilitated a comfortable interface between the artificial receptor and human beings (9)(10)(11). On the basis of their high ionic conductivity and stretchability, hydrogels are promising materials as soft conductors for the SAER (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20).…”

“…Soft embodiments of electronics are becoming pervasive to modern societies, with applications ranging from wearables, medical health monitoring, and soft robotics to consumer electronics. [ 1–3 ] The rapidly increasing number of electronic appliances however raises substantial environmental concerns as improper disposal of tech waste by landfilling, the use of toxic materials, and a large carbon footprint pose a tremendous threat to nature. [ 4 ] With recycling being often impractical and expensive, emerging degradable forms of electronics offer a sustainable solution if the performance gap to conventional electronics can be closed.…”
