Stretchable and bendable carbon nanotube on PDMS super-lyophobic sheet for liquid metal manipulation

Abstract: We report a vertically-aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forest on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheet as a novel widely stretchable and bendable anti-wetting super-lyophobic surface for naturally oxidized gallium-based liquid metals. The vertically-aligned CNT has inherent chemical inertness and a hierarchical texture combining micro/nanoscale roughness; these two characters render the developed sheet as a super-lyophobic substrate against gallium-based liquid metals. The vertically-aligned CNT forest was first gro… Show more

“…Several methods exist to avoid adhesion of the oxide‐coated metal. Rough surfaces (Figure b) helps prevent adhesion, yet it is challenging to fabricate non‐wetting surfaces on the interior of small microcapillaries. Alternatively, pre‐filling the channel with a “carrier fluid” prior to injection of the metal creates a “slip layer” between the metal plug and the wall, which prevents adhesion .…”

“…Recently, artificial skin‐like wrinkling materials have been proposed as a powerful multifunctional structure for several applications including flexible electronics, self‐assembling 3D architectures, bioactive materials, particle sieves, and membrane technologies . These multifunctional materials are commonly fabricated by deposition of flat 2D solid thin films such as silica, gold, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and thin polystyrene films on prestretched elastomeric substrates. Relaxation of the prestretched substrate wrinkles the top film into a multiscale nano–micro rough hierarchical structure, with demonstrated potential for enabling tunable wettability …”

“…This method produced patterns of randomly oriented CNTs embedded in PDMS. To produce vertically aligned CNTs on PDMS, Kim et al used CVD to grow vertically aligned CNTs on a silicon wafer. With nanoimprint equipment, they transferred CNTs to a cured layer of PDMS by simply contacting the vertically aligned CNTs to the PDMS substrate.…”
