Objective:To analyze the characteristics of physiological dermatological changes during pregnancy.Methods: This is a descriptive study, carried out in a public maternity hospital in southern Brazil, from June to August 2021 through a randomized sample of puerperal women. Through a self-reported interview, maternal-fetal data, sun exposure, photoprotection and skin changes were analyzed. Results: A total of 439 postpartum women were evaluated, 415 (94.5%) of whom presented some dermatological alteration. 237 (54.0) felt uncomfortable, affecting the selfesteem of 182 (41.5) and social interaction of 82 (18.7). However, only 64 (14.5) received medical advice and only 62 (14.1) underwent treatment. Hyperpigmentation affected 345 patients (78.6), starting mainly in the 2 nd trimester. The most affected regions were linea alba (68.7), nipples (77.4) and axillae (57.7). Melasma affected 144 women (32.8), and the 2 nd trimester was also the most prevalent. Of these, 92 (63.9) had Centrofacial Melasma, 19 (13.2) Peripheral and 33 (22.9) Mixed. Stretch marks occurred in 253 postpartum women (57.6), starting in the 3 rd trimester. The main regions affected were the abdomen (77.9), hips (49.8) and breasts (28.0). Vascular changes occurred in 123 patients (28.0), starting in the 3 rd trimester. The most common presentations were varicosities (86.2) and vascular spiders (22.8). Erythema Palmar affected 77 women (17.5), with onset prevalent in the 2 nd trimester. Conclusion:94.5% of the patients had some dermatological alteration, with Hyperpigmentation (78.6) and Stretch Marks (57.6) being the most prevalent.

BackgroundThe appearance of striae gravidarum (SG) during pregnancy is a common problem. The most common SG are abdominal striae, which can cause the greatest sequelae after pregnancy, and in the long term. There are several solutions to prevent and treat these striae, but not all are completely effective, and not without side effects.AimsThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment that applies an electromagnetic field under vacuum (V‐EMF therapy) on the abdominal SG.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of 26 women affected by abdominal SG and treated with V‐EMF therapy. The results were evaluated using two different 5‐point Likert Scales: one administered to the treated subjects to evaluate their satisfaction, and one to the doctors who performed the treatment, to evaluate the improvement of the striae. The presence of side effects, and the effects of sun exposure after treatment were also considered.ResultsOnly two treated subjects rated their level of satisfaction with a Score III on the Liker Scale. Everyone else expressed higher levels of satisfaction. Only one doctor rated the improvement of the striae with a Liker scale score of III. All the others reported greater improvements. No discomfort or side effects were noted either during the individual treatment sessions, or at the end of the treatment. The striae showed a newfound ability to tan.ConclusionsV‐EMF therapy proves to be a valid, safe, and effective treatment modality for SG.

Acne vulgaris frequently affects women during pregnancy and lactation. Hormonal and physiologic changes in pregnancy contribute to the pathogenesis of acne during the various phases of pregnancy. Several effective acne treatments commonly prescribed in the general population are contraindicated during pregnancy or lactation. There is a lack of guidelines and updated resources on acne management in these populations. In this narrative review, we summarize existing evidence on the safety and efficacy of acne treatments during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Acne management in pregnancy and lactation should follow a stepwise approach based on severity to minimize risk. Topical therapies, such as benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, or keratolytics, can be used to treat mildto-moderate disease. Moderate-to-severe acne may require systemic treatments, including penicillin, amoxicillin, cephalexin, and erythromycin, with special consideration for trimester-specific teratogenicity of medications and relevant medical history of the mother and infant. For refractory cases, oral or intralesional corticosteroids as well as laser and light therapies may be considered. This review provides an updated reference to aid patient-physician decision-making on acne management in these special populations.
