Striations in dielectric barrier discharge systems with a hollow anode

Abstract: The dynamics of the charging of an elongated hollow anode covered with a dielectric layer by an electron current is studied via three-dimensional particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo kinetic simulations. It is shown that this process is accompanied by the successive formation of striations in the plasma created by the electron impact ionization of the background gas. A number of specially designed numerical experiments are performed to further explore the nature of this phenomenon. An experimental setup where this typ… Show more

“…the ion/electron striations form one by one on the path where the plasma extends. Another viewpoint suggested by some researchers is that the plasma is created accompanying the striation formation in PDPs [98][99][100][101][102].…”

“…The role of space charges on striation dynamics in PDP cells is not fully understood. Recently, striations in micro-discharges with a hollow anode covered by dielectric were studied in the numerical experiments [101] via three-dimensional PIC simulations. Striations appeared in Ne, Ar and Xe for the reduced electric fields E/p ∼ 50 V (cm Torr −1 ).…”

“…The transverse self-organized patterns in glow DBD system can be reproduced by using dynamic simulations (i.e., fluid models [16][17][18][19]). But the longitudinal striations in DBD system can only be reproduced by kinetic model like PIC-MCC [22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…4. The above process is typical for striation forming above the dielectric surface in many DBD configurations [22][23][24][25][26][27]. From this viewpoint, the plasma generates during the striation formation rather than the striations emerge in the striated plasma background.…”
