STRIDE BP international initiative for accurate blood pressure measurement: Systematic review of published validation studies of blood pressure measuring devices

Abstract: Blood pressure (BP) is a vital sign, and its measurement is essential for diagnosing and treating hypertension. The accuracy of BP monitors is therefore essential, but unfortunately very few devices available on the market have been validated using an established protocol. STRIDE BP (www.strid ebp.org) is an international nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the accuracy of BP measurement and the diagnosis of hypertension. It has a prestigious Scientific Advisory Board and operates in affiliation… Show more

“…HBPM requires training of the users and should be applied under medical supervision 6 . Although the importance of using validated devices is widely known, most devices on the market have not been properly validated for accuracy, and inappropriate cuff sizes are often used 17 , 45 . In addition, this method also provides only static snapshot measurements and not BP readings of the individual at work or during routine daily activity or sleep.…”

“… 3) However, even standard cuff-based BPM devices have often not been validated correctly, as reported by STRIDE BP, an international initiative for accurate BPM. 1) As example in a recent study in Australia non-validated home BPM devices dominated the online marketplace resulting in roughly 18% of upper arm cuff devices (51 out of 278), 8% of wrist cuff devices (13 out of 162) and 0% of wristband wearable devices (0 out of 532) proven accurate according to international validation standards. 6) …”

“…Hypertension, the clinical manifestation of increased BP, is both preventable and treatable 1 . A major impediment to the clinical management (diagnosis, treatment, and follow‐up) of hypertension is inaccurate BP assessment 2‐8 . This is primarily a result of lack of training or lack of compliance in measuring BP properly, performing measurement in inappropriate environments, inadequate preparation of the person whose BP is being measured, and inaccurate or inappropriate (unvalidated) equipment 2‐8 .…”
