“…25 The prestroke cancer figure is slightly larger than that found in an older patient population with ischemic stroke. 10 Our results are also in line with a recent study that included also benign and unspecific neoplasms in their analysis. 26 The median time from cancer detection to ischemic stroke was 4.9 years, which is in the same order of magnitude as in a study from Norway, where it was 6.8 years.…”

“…8,9 Cancer patients have a higher in-hospital poststroke mortality rate than those without cancer. 10 Cancer patients with cryptogenic stroke have higher D-dimer levels and more frequently infarcts located in multiple vascular territories than patients with stroke associated with other pathogenesis. [11][12][13] The frequency of traditional ischemic stroke risk factors among cancer patients differs between studies.…”

“…It is commonly mentioned in the literature that heparin is the preferred treatment (2,(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). In recent years, low-molecular-weight heparins have become popular, in part due to their improved pharmacokinetics, the ability to administer single daily dosages, and the reduced incidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (16)(17)(18).…”

“…Specifically, cancer-related mechanisms such as coagulopathy and tumour occlusion are a common cause of IS in patients with cancer [10][11][12][13][14]. In addition, treatment modalities such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy may also increase the risk of IS [13][14][15]. However, little is known regarding the causes and outcomes of IS in critically ill patients with cancer.…”
