Stromal and epithelial cells react differentially to c-kit in fibroepithelial tumors of the breast

Abstract: Abstract. The CD117 protein is a tyrosine-kinase receptor encoded by the c-kit gene that frequently bears activating mutations in gastrointestinal tumors. Conflicting findings regarding CD117 expression in other stromal tumors, including phyllodes tumors (PTs), have been reported in the literature.

“…The lack of existing research with similar design hinders the correlation of results. The higher epithelial immunoreactivity of CD117 in fibroadenomas in relation to benign PTB was similar to the results of Logullo et al 31 Djordjevic and Hanna 19 reported that 75% of the CF cases studied and 86% of the benign PTB presented epithelial positivity for CD117, considering a 5% cutoff point in the epithelial cells. A cutoff point was not used here, but rather the association between the immunoreactivity score and tumor types.…”

“…and Kuijper et al . Additional work on biomarker expression in epithelial and stromal elements of phyllodes tumours lends further credence to their interactions . For example, the level of CXCR4, an epithelial–stromal interaction‐related molecule, was found to be increased in the stromal component of higher‐grade phyllodes tumours …”
