Stromal–epithelial measurements of prostate cancer in native Japanese and Japanese-American men

Abstract: We measured the histologic stromal and epithelial tissue components of the benign (normal) and malignant tissue compartments of Japanese-Americans (J-A) and native Japanese (NJ) men living in Japan. The patient cohort included 25 NJ men undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) in Nagoya, Japan and 25 J-A (second or third generation US born). We conducted tissue image quantitation (in-house image software) of the stromal and epithelial compartments in malignant and adjacent normal tissue areas from a tissue microa… Show more

“…The average epithelium percentage in normal prostate tissues was 24.14 ± 5.58% (Figure 5A). This ratio was similar to what was reported before [3]. The average epithelium percentage in prostate tumors was 57.98 ± 19.75%.…”

“…Traditionally, the epithelium contents are read based on nuclei counts from a hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained histology slide by a pathologist. Another approach is to stain the histology slide with anti-cytokeratin antibody CAM 5.2 (staining for epithelia) and Masson trichrome (staining for collagenous stromal structures) [3]. More recently, with the digitization of whole slide imaging, a number of algorithms have been developed for computer-assisted readings.…”

“…Several studies have examined the effect of racial differences on BPH and PCa cellular composition. 19,20 In the present study, no histopathological differences were observed between MRS-detected and -undetected PCa foci, and we found that the (Cho + Cr)/Cit ratio was not correlated with any histopathological features, although the mean (Cho + Cr)/ Cit ratio was significantly higher for detected PCa foci than for undetected PCa foci. A large, recent prospective multicenter study showed no benefit of spectroscopy to localize PCa compared with T2-weighted imaging alone.…”
