Strong aerosol–cloud interaction in altocumulus during updraft periods: lidar observations over central Europe

Abstract: Abstract. For the first time, a liquid-water cloud study of the aerosol-cloud-dynamics relationship, solely based on lidar, was conducted. Twenty-nine cases of pure liquid-water altocumulus layers were observed with a novel dual-field-ofview Raman lidar over the polluted central European site of Leipzig, Germany, between September 2010 and September 2012. By means of the novel Raman lidar technique, cloud properties such as the droplet effective radius and cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC) in the lower… Show more

“…In contrast, liquid water content or path was more sensitive to adjustments in cloud base or updraft velocity. Collocated Raman and Doppler lidar measurements also confirm that turbulence and entrainment convolute the aerosol−droplet number correlation above the cloud base within altocumulus (26). Along with studies like these, the attribution metrics presented here are useful in determining if models capture the correct source of N d and N i variability.…”

“…Conversely, in situ airborne measurements are closer to the process scale and may result in more accurate estimates of the aerosol effect (Werner et al, 2014). However, the studies reviewed in Pandithurai et al (2012) and Schmidt et al (2015) are mostly for stratus or cumulus clouds over ocean. Additionally, measurements of w were either not available or were not differentiated in most of the previous analyses, while the results are often integrated in altitude or limited to a specific cloud layer (e.g., cloud top in satellite retrievals).…”

“…Pandithurai et al (2012) provide a compilation of this type of calculation (see their Table 2), showing a high variability among the sources. According to Schmidt et al (2015), the differences are due to not only the measurement setup but also to the region (ocean or land), the types of clouds, and the differences in the methodologies. Remote sensing techniques often retrieve vertically integrated quantities at relatively rough horizontal resolution, which can smooth the results, meaning lower sensitivities.…”

“…This is implicated by the increase of both the ACI metrics as well as the correlation coefficients. The invigoration of ACI processes in the updraught regime was also reported in previous studies (Schmidt et al, 2015). It is important to note that the number of available profiles is greatly diminished by the selection of updraught areas only.…”
