Strongly correlated oxides for energy harvesting

Abstract: We review recent advances in strongly correlated oxides as thermoelectric materials in pursuit of energy harvesting. We discuss two topics: one is the enhancement of the ordinary thermoelectric properties by controlling orbital degrees of freedom and orbital fluctuation not only in bulk but also at the interface of correlated oxides. The other topic is the use of new phenomena driven by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of materials. In 5 d electron oxides, we show some SOC-related transport phe… Show more

“…Now that some have been proposed, studies of their intriguing phases have blossomed -not just for basic understanding of their electronic and magnetic properties, 4 but also for applications such as spintronics 19,20 and energy harvesting. 21 It is also important to consider that spin-orbit coupling will affect the behaviour of the electrons in any material containing high-Z elements, not just transition metal compounds. In fact an interesting parallel can be drawn between these materials and hybrid perovskites containing heavy main-group elements such as Pb and Bi.…”

“…4. Here, we see that high spin Co 4+ ( t 3 2g e 2 g ) and low spin Co 2+ ( t 6 2g e 1 g ) species were both formed at the vicinity of Sb 5+ dopant. Furthermore, a larger radius of Co 2+ at octahedral coordination of 0.75 Å introduced significant lattice distortions that forced several Co 3+ to take high spin configurations ( t 4 2g e 2 g ).…”
