Structural analysis of zeolite NaA synthesized by a cost-effective hydrothermal method using kaolin and its use as water softener

Abstract: Zeolite 4A (LTA) has been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method, where kaolin was used as silica and alumina source. The synthesized zeolite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser granulometry, and FTIR spectroscopy. XRD data from the Rietveld refinement method confirmed only one crystallographic phase. Zeolite A morphology was observed by SEM analysis, and it showed well-defined crystals with slightly different sizes but with the same cubic shape. P… Show more

“…This is consistent with the literature [12][13][14]. The FT-IR of the zeolitic porous material showed the appearance of the following absorption bands at 462.83 cm -1 corresponding to the TO vibrations; 546.72 cm -1 which corresponds to the vibrations of the skeleton TOT and 1034.62 cm -1 which corresponds to the Si-OH vibrations, and they are consistent with the literature [11] (Figure 2b).…”

“…The batches' composition was calculated stoichiometricaly with a reaction mixture of 3Na 2 O -Al 2 O 3 -xSiO 2 -H 2 O, with values of x in the range of 3.5 to 5.0 mol. In the second series of experiments, the following conditions of synthesis were evaluated: temperature (90, 95, 100 and 115 °C at 20-hour) and time (6,20,24 and 48 hours at a 90 °C). The samples were based on molar composition 4Na 2 O -Al 2 O 3 -4SiO 2 -H 2 O using 2.18 g of metakaolin waste material, 1.569g NaOH and 4.157 g of Na 2 O. SiO 2 .5H 2 O.…”

“…Traditionally, these microporous materials are commonly produced from hydrogels aluminates and sodium silicates; however, the production of zeolites from alternative sources of silica and alumina such as ash 2 , volcanic glasses 3 , diatomites 4 and clays 5 , continue to be investigated. Among the clays, several investigators have studied the preparation of zeolite from kaolin and have been successful in the synthesis of zeolites, mainly NaA [6] , mordenite 7 , faujasites 8 , and zeolite NaP 9,10 . According to the International Zeolite Association (IZA) 11 zeolite NaP has a GIS (gismondine) structure type showing small pores.…”

“…Zeolite also has a high adsorption activity and typical molecular sieve properties. It is also used as water softener (Loiola et al, 2012). However, it was used in combination with bentonite for increasing sedimentation of the composite sorbent.…”
