Structural and mechanical properties of CeO2 reinforced Al matrix nanocomposites

Abstract: In this study, Al-CeO2 nanocomposites containing various concentrations of reinforcement were fabricated by ball milling and microwave sintering process. A comparison of structural and mechanical properties of the developed nanocomposites is presented to elucidate the effect of reinforcement. Different characterizing tools such as X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), surface profilometrer, microhardness tester and universal compression testing machines were employed.… Show more

“…The use of a very slight fraction of nano particles results in a decent improvement in the performance of the developed composite material. 27,72,75,76 The composite prepared with long fiber or reinforcing elements which have higher surface area proved to be having better structural and functional integrity over micro/nano particles reinforced material. The use of nano wire in the polymer-based composite material is widely used in the process, while in case of MMCs, the dispersion and mixing are prime factors for arrangements of reinforced material in the matrix material.…”

“…These inviting properties make them attractive for a wide variety of applications. Recently, the application of AMMCs has surged in the above-mentioned sectors, which require high AMMCs have been developed using various reinforcements, such as alumina (Al2O3) [15], silicon carbide (SiC) [16], boron nitride (BN) [17], titanium carbide (TiC) [18], silicon nitride (Si3N4) [19], boron carbide (B4C) [20], Al-Cu-Li [21], nitinol (NiTi) [22], aluminum nitride (AlN) [23], zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) [24], cerium dioxide (CeO2) [25], and titanium dioxide (TiO2) [26], that have shown distinctive contributions in enhancing the structural, thermal, damping, mechanical, and corrosion properties of AMMCs [27,28]. However, there are some limitations in choosing the type of preparation method.…”

“…On the other hand, the C element, which is transformed into Al 4 C 3 during the as cast and extrusion process, significantly improve mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, and Young's modulus [21]. Lastly, CeO 2 addition greatly increase the hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, and ductility of composites in the as-cast condition [22,23].…”
