Structural and Neotectonic Criteria for Location of Water Wells in Semi-Arid Crystalline Terrains: A Preliminary Approach in the Eastern Domain of Rio Grande Do Norte State, Northeast Brazil

Abstract: The traditional methods to locate water wells in crystalline terranes are being re-evaluated aiming to improve the success rate of the procedures. We describe the preliminary approach being used in the eastern crystalline domain of Rio Grande do Norte (NE Brazil), encompassing areas around Santo Antônio and Santa Cruz cities. Emphasis is given to re-evaluate the classical structural criteria in the light of modern concepts on rock deformation and the regional tectonic framework, especially in the context of th… Show more

“…Previous studies have related the water productivity in crystalline terrains to lithostructural conditions and the specific Cenozoic tectonics across southeastern and southern Brazil, with examples from the state of São Paulo (Fernandes and Rudolph 2001;Neves and Morales 2007a, b;Madrucci et al 2008;Alves 2008;Fernandes et al 2011Fernandes et al , 2016; Rio Grande do Norte (Coriolano et al 2000); Ceará (Souza Filho 2008;Friedel et al 2012). In Paraná, the same considerations were made by Athayde (2013) for the volcanic flows of the Serra Geral Aquifer System and by Salamuni (2003, 2008b) referring to the Atuba Complex, in the crystalline portion of the metropolitan area of Curitiba, the capital of Paraná.…”
