Structural and optical characterization and efficacy of hydrothermal synthesized Cu and Ag doped zinc oxide nanoplate bactericides

Abstract: Structural and optical characterization and efficacy of hydrothermal synthesized Cu and Ag doped zinc oxide nanoplate bactericides. Materials Chemistry and Physics 184 (2016), pp. 172-182. http://dx.AbstractThis study reports on a novel synthesis of pure zinc oxide and both Cu and Ag doped ZnO nanoplates using a simple and lowcost hydrothermal method. The structural and optical properties of the nanoplates were quantified and the materials were tested for antibacterial activity. Xray diffraction revealed the f… Show more

“…Previous work had shown dose dependent activity of the nanoparticles on for E. coli (MTTC443) S. aureus (MTCC3160) and S. typhi (MTCC3216) and it was found to be significant even at lowest concentration (25). These early results even compared favorably compared to a com mercial antibiotic used as control (DMSO) (25). The results reported here in Figure 5 and Table 2 show that hydrothermal synthesis of doped and undoped ZnO is effective against grampositive bacte ria (S. epidermis).…”

“…In addition to zinc, both silver and copper have been proposed as an alternative to conventional antimicrobials for some applications (23). Following an open source nanotechnology approach (24) recent work (25) has tested hydrothermal synthesized nanoscale ZnO plates for efficacy as a bactericide for E. coli, S. typhi and S. aureus along with Cu and Ag doped ZnO powders (Cu:ZnO and Ag:ZnO). The materials were well characterized with the effect of doping Cu and Ag on ZnO quantified for the structural and optical properties and the efficacy for killing human bacterial pathogens was promising (25).…”

“…Metallic copper and silver are known for their antibacterial properties. Because of their ability to disturb the bacterial growth, modern studies focus on the exposure of copper and silver to the material infested by bacteria . The release of copper micro and nanoparticles and Cu 2+ ions from cellulose fibers has been investigated by Llorens et al.…”

“…8, the antibacterial property of ceramic was greatly improved by Ag/ZnO nanocomposite loading, and optimal antibacterial activity was obtained with 5% Ag loading against E.coil. This phenomenal possibility caused by the small crystallite size (due to the mismatch ionic radii of Ag (1.44 Å) and Zn 2+ (0.74 Å)), positive surface charge (due to the negatively charged bacteria) of Ag/ZnO nanocomposite and the photoactivity of ZnO and the plasmonic effect of silver [29].…”
