The Nd 3+ doped strontium hexa-aluminates crystals Sr 1-x Nd y La x-y Mg x Al 12-x O 19 -ASL are interesting for 4 F 3/2 → 4 I 9/2 laser emission in 900 nm range. To improve the laser emission characteristics, a detailed correlation between spectral characteristics and composition is necessary. The results of spectral investigation of Nd 3+ in ASL on an extended composition range are presented. Spectral characteristics of three types of nonequivalent Nd 3+ centers, optimal compositions for dominance of every center and the cationic distribution types are analyzed.OCIS codes: (160.3380) Laser materials, (160.5690) Rare earths doped materials.
