Structural changes and immunohistochemical localisation of epidermal growth factor receptor in the true vocal fold of female albino rats administered anabolic, androgenic steroids, and effects of anti-androgen therapy

Abstract: Anabolic steroids caused structural and immunohistochemical changes within the female rat true vocal fold. Co-administration of anti-androgens did not prevent these changes, suggesting that anti-androgens have a limited role in the management of such changes in humans.

“…Administration of anabolicandrogenic steroids to female rats results in thickening of the vocal folds, including the lamina propria (48). This was in agreement with our experiment results, in which castration caused a decrease in vocal cord ECM expression in the vocal fold lamina propria.…”

“…Although the TA muscles may not be estrogen dependent, other sex hormones likely influence the neuromuscular parameters of the vocal folds. For example, TA muscle fibers hypertrophy with administration of androgens, consistent with our previous finding that male rats have larger myofiber sizes than females, regardless of the individual rat's weight 25,39 . This may also explain why men have a greater rate of atrophy of the TA muscles in old age compared to women 2,40,41 .…”

“…To explain these irreversible changes, Amer and al. demonstrated structural and immunophysiological changes in an animal model after 2 months of systemic anabolic steroid treatment . The rat model vocal folds showed thicker epithelial layers with increased mitotic figures, thicker lamina propria, and thicker muscle fibers.…”
