Linguists all over the world have conducted various research on how gender affects language. Code-switches, as one of the forms of bilingual speech, interact with many variables, including gender. This paper provides insights on the phenomenon of code-switches in mass media discourse, specifically in modern glossy magazines Elle and Gentlemen’s Quarterly. We focus our analysis mostly on pragmatic and gender aspects. The objective of the research is to illustrate how the code-switch patterns differ by gender in terms of frequency and pragmatic use. We collected the data from two gender-oriented glossy magazines. The theoretical and conceptual background of the study is the Matrix Language Frame Model by C. Myers-Scotton and the functional classification of code-switches by G. Chirsheva. Findings indicate that code-switches in glossy magazines have eight different functions: topic-related, effort-saving, quotational, self-identification, humorous, metalinguistic, addressee-oriented and emotional. One of the major research results expressed in numerical form: journalists use twice as many code-switches in Elle in comparison to Gentlemen’s Quarterly (434 and 234, respectively). The contrastive analysis has also shown that code-switches perform common and specific pragmatic functions in women-oriented and in men-oriented glossy publications. The author examines the structural features of code-switches in two novels - "The Corsican Caper" and "Chasing Sezanne" written by the modern British writer Peter Mayle. The matrix language of multilingual utterances is English and the embedded language is French. Code-switches are the alternate use of units of one language within the utterance in another language during one conversation. Two groups of code-switches are distinguished: those in the bilingual characters’ speech and those in the author’s speech. Peter Mayle has used different types of code-switches to emphasize their bilingual competence when they switch from English to French in various communicative situations. Different types of code-switches have been fixed: intersententional, intrasententional - within a phrase (insertions, embedded language islands), clause-switches, and tag-switches. The author of the article has found out 434 units of code-switches in the two novels, with 258 units being represented in the author’s speech and 176 units in the bilingual characters’ speech. The study has shown that the most frequently used type in the bilingual characters’ speech and in the author’s speech is intrasententional within a simple sentence, with embedded language islands being predominant. The main objective of the article is to compare the structural characteristics of code switching in the speech of four-year-old children who learn Russian and English in Russia and the United States. The material of the study was extracted from video and audio recordings made by the authors during the observation of four-year-old children in the process of their interaction with other children and adults. The analysis of the structural characteristics of intra-phrasal switching was carried out on the basis of the provisions of the theory and interaction of matrix and guest languages (a framework model of a matrix language) developed by K. Myers-Scott. The structure of code switching in the context of monoethnic child bilingualism, which was formed in children in Russia, and in situations of the development of heritational child bilingualism in Russian children in the United States, has quite a few common characteristics. The main differences that were observed in switching between Russian and American children are quantitative. Interpretation of the research results is closely related to the specifics of the formation of children's bilingualism and the socio-cultural characteristics of bilingual communication. For contact linguistics, observations of the interpenetration of the morphosyntactic features of the Russian and English languages during their close contact in oral speech are relevant.
