Structural characterization and Biological Activity of Sulfolipids from selected Marine Algae

Abstract: ried from 1.25% (in L. papillose) to 11.82% (in D. fasciola) of the total lipid contents. However, no significant differences in sulfate content (0.13 -0.21%) were observed among all these algae species. All SLs were characterized by high contents of palmitic acid (C 16:0 ), which ranged from 30.91% in G. cylindriea to 63.11% in T. atomatia. The main constitutes of algal sulfolipids were identified as sulfoquinovosyl-di-acylglycerol and sulfoquinovosyl acylglycerol. The sulfolipids of different algal species ex… Show more

“…Other absorption bands detected are 1644 (absorbed water) and 983 (CO) cm −1 . An inconsistency in the differently sulfated CNCs is the presence of the absorption band at 811 cm −1 , which is attributed to COS symmetric stretching, whereas the absorption band is present for all CNC samples except the fully desulfated CNC sample (CNC‐0). These findings are illustrated in Figure for a fully desulfated sample [Figure (a)] and for a sulfated CNC sample [Figure (b)].…”

“…Algal biomass is mainly composed by minerals, sugars, proteins, and lipids, that represent 1-15%, depending on the algal species and its habitat. Lipids found in the macroalgae from the three phyla, Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta, and Ochrophyta (Table 3), have demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and fungi [29,[89][90][91][92] (Table 4). Most of these antimicrobial lipids were isolated from Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta.…”

“…Glycolipids have been identified as biogenic compounds possessing a variety of bioactivities, such as antioxidant, antiviral, or antitumor [89,95,103,122,[130][131][132]. The biological activity of glycolipids has been associated to the length of their fatty acyl chains, the number and position of the double bonds, the structure of the sugar moiety, and its anomeric configuration [131].…”
