Structural Determination of the Subsidiary Colors in Food Blue No. 1 (Brilliant Blue FCF) Aluminum Lake Detected by Paper Chromatography.

Abstract: One of eight Food Blue No. 1 aluminum lakes (B-1Als) used in the o$cial inspection of coal-tar colors in fiscal year 1999 had a violet sub-spot during paper chromatography and was rejected. To clarify the orgin of the sub-spot, the violet subsidiary color (Sub-V) was isolated from the sample. On the basis of NMR and MS analyses and ion chromatography, the structure of the subsidiary color was elucidated to be 2- [[4-[N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfophenylmethyl)

“…In any case, it is very important to determine the contents of BB in food. Some analytical methods have been reported including spectrophotometry (Coelho et al 2005;Vidotti et al 2005;Kara et al 2005), liquid chromatography (Minioti et al 2007;Vidotti et al 2006;Zou et al 2001;Lancaster et al 1999), ion chromatography (Tsuji et al 2001;Chen et al 1998), and voltammetry (Florian et al 2002;Kapor et al 2001). Among these methods, however, spectrophotometry, though it is widely used for the determination of BB due to its excellent detection limits obtained, often suffers from poor sensitivity and interference from some anions.…”
