Structural, electrical, and multiferroic characteristics of lead-free multiferroic: Bi(Co0.5Ti0.5)O3–BiFeO3 solid solution

Abstract: A solid solution of bismuth cobalt titanate [Bi(Co0.5Ti0.5)O3] and bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) with a composition Bi(Co0.40Ti0.40Fe0.20)O3 (abbreviated as BCTF80/20) was synthesized via a cost effective solid-state technique.

“…The BiFeO 3 is a rhombohedrally distorted perovskite material, which means that the ferroelectric polarization can have orientation along the four pseudo-cubic diagonals (<111>) [35][36][37][38]. The largest relative displacements are those of Bi relative to O, consistent with a stereochemically active Bi lone pair that might to induce ferroelectricity of BiFeO 3 .…”

“…The piezoelectric hysteresis loop shows a remanent out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) value 70 pm V À1 , representing the piezoresponse of the film in the fully clamped state. [37]. As the value of dielectric permittivity decreases upon increasing frequency, its nature could be described by Koop's hypothesis and Maxwell-Wagner mechanism.…”

“…The development of ecofriendly/lead-free multiferroic materials has additional advantages over environment concerned as well as health issues of human beings. Some toxicfree materials are now considered for electronic devices including information storage media, actuators, spintronics, transducers, sensors and optoelectronic devices [1][2][3][4][5]. Among most of the developed single-phase multiferroics, bismuth ferrite (BiFeO 3 referred hereafter BFO) is found the much more useful material which has both magnetic and ferroelectric characteristics at or above room temperature.…”
