Structural Equation Modeling in the Communication Sciences, 1995-2000

Abstract: Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a viable multivariate tool used by communication researchers for the past quarter century. Building off Cappella (1975) as well as McPhee and Babrow (1987), this study summarizes the use of this technique from 1995–2000 in 37 communication‐based academic journals. We identify and critically assess 3 unique methods for testing structural relationships via SEM in terms of the specification, estimation, and evaluation of their respective structural equation models. We provide… Show more

“…CFA has taken on a major role in scale development as it can greatly enhance the confidence in the structure and the psychometric properties of a new measure (Holbert & Stephenson, 2002;Noar, 2003). In CFA, it is possible to represent hypotheses about the factorial structure of constructs (Bollen, 1989).…”

“…All studies were part of a larger project dealing with trust in news media (Kohring & Matthes, 2004). In order to establish and empirically confirm a standardized concept of NFO, a confirmatory instead of an explorative approach-as is still common in many scale developments in the communication sciences (Holbert & Stephenson, 2002)-is needed. Thus, the data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis, which allows hypotheses about the structure of concepts to be represented.…”

“…Similar problems have been observed in political and health communication (see McLeod, Kosicki, & McLeod, 2002;Worden & Flynn, 2002). Despite calls for conceptual models to include media stimuli, psychological states (mediator variables), and media effects at the same time (Holbert & Stephenson, 2002McLeod, et al, 2002;O'Keefe, 2003), mediator variables generally receive short shrift in communication research.…”

“…Due to the dichotomous nature of the Goldberg response scales (yes/no), asymptotically distribution-free (ADF) estimation, which does not require rigid assumptions regarding population distributions, was preferred to maximum likelihood estimation (MacCallum et al 1996). Model fit was evaluated using the χ 2 test as an index of absolute fit, and several alternative indices that are less sensitive to sample size (Holbert and Stephenson 2002) Table 1 presents demographic and illicit drug use characteristics for the four current ecstasy using groups. There were no significant differences across groups for somatic, non-somatic and overall psychological distress scores, or in terms of gender distribution.…”
