Structural–functional Correlation in Patients With Diabetic Macular Edema

Abstract: Patients with DME can have reduced reading speed despite good visual acuity. Maximal reading speed is often reported to be difficult to perform, inconsistent, and affected by language and educational level. However, in this study, the authors found that the central MP4 points are quick and easy to test in most of the patients, and are highly correlated with MRS. Microperimetry might therefore represent a useful additional functional test that could be considered better than BCVA or reading speed in quantifying… Show more

“…Previous studies have also correlated reductions in reading speeds with reduced sensitivity on microperimetry (Edington et al. ), suggesting that reading tests uncover other aspects of visual dysfunction. Moreover, reading is more representative of the impact of vision on the QOL than Snellen VA, because it reflects real world function in patients with macular pathologies (Jackson & Owsley ; Kanonidou ).…”

“…Alternatively, a free ILM flap could be created and placed inside the macular hole, as chosen by the surgeon during the procedure. On all patients, fluid-air exchange and insufflation of SF 6 into the vitreous cavity were performed, taking special care that the ILM flap stayed in the correct position. This was done under visualization via intraoperative OCT (ReScan 700; Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany).…”

“…In patients with diabetic macular oedema, central points in microperimetry were correlated with reading speed [6,7], indicating that microperimetry gives additional information on visual function, compared to distance corrected visual acuity (DCVA).…”

“…With the MNREAD Charts, patients with retinitis pigmentosa [ 87 ], AMD [ 88 , 89 ], macular pucker and macular hole surgery [ 90 ], diabetic macular edema [ 91 ], and albinism [ 92 ] have been investigated, and further studies about the reading performance of low-vision patients have been performed [ 93 98 ]. In one study, the reading acuity was examined with the Bailey–Lovie Word Reading Cards, and reading speed was investigated with the MNREAD test [ 89 ].…”
