Structural health monitoring data fusion for in-situ life prognosis of composite structures

Abstract: A novel framework to fuse structural health monitoring (SHM) data from different in-situ monitoring techniques is proposed aiming to develop a hyper-feature towards more effective prognostics. A state-of-the-art Non-Homogenous Hidden Semi Markov Model (NHHSMM) is utilized to model the damage accumulation of composite structures, subjected to fatigue loading, and estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) using conventional as well as fused SHM data. Acoustic Emission (AE) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are … Show more

“…Acoustic Emission (AE) as a passive NDE technique has the capability for the online monitoring of the induced damages in laminated composites [17][18][19][20][21][22]. Pashmforoush et al [23] classified four different damage mechanisms in sandwich composites using AE and k-Means genetic algorithm.…”

“…SHM technology is implemented in various countries like Europe, USA, Korea, Japan etc. for monitoring of large structures [4], [5], [7], [10], [13], [16]- [18] [19]- [21]. The main aim behind the implementation of SHM is to determine the damage during initiation itself so that the further damage propagation can be ceased by an alarm in the initial stage with the help of continuous monitoring by structurally integrated sensors.…”

“…The model-based method assumes that a detailed numerical model of the structure is available for damage identification; while the response-based method depends only on experimental response data from structures [12], [13].…”

“…Combining Lamb wave with another passive NDE technique, i.e. AE, lets to move from the schedulebased to condition-based maintenance paradigm which has some advantages over the first one such as improving system reliability, increasing operational availability, and reducing the times and costs of maintenance operations [24][25][26]. Thus, in the present study, the active and passive acoustic methods (i.e.…”
