Structural Health Monitoring for Advanced Composite Structures: A Review

Abstract: Condition-based maintenance refers to the installation of permanent sensors on a structure/system. By means of early fault detection, severe damage can be avoided, allowing efficient timing of maintenance works and avoiding unnecessary inspections at the same time. These are the goals for structural health monitoring (SHM). The changes caused by incipient damage on raw data collected by sensors are quite small, and are usually contaminated by noise and varying environmental factors, so the algorithms used to e… Show more

“…glass and carbon fibres, aramid and basalt fibres and natural fibres) reinforced polyester and epoxy adhesive as specified in DNVGL-ST-0376 and IEC61400-23 standards ( Mishnaevsky et al, 2017 ). Review of the SHM techniques in the monitoring of composite structures and specifically for wind turbine blades can be found in the works of Güemes et al (2020) and Schubel et al (2013) respectively. The materials used in offshore wave energy converters mostly include steel, the selection of which follows the same standards for other floating offshore structures such as OWT.…”

“…Monitoring of functional parts is of great interest and could help to improve the lifetime of these parts or to avoid failures in advance [ 1 , 2 ]. In the field of aerospace, embedded fiber optic sensors have been used as a real-time monitoring system in an aircraft with single-point, multi-point, or distributed sensors [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ].…”
