Structural, morphological and electrical studies of BaCe0.8Y0.2O3-δ synthesized by solution combustion method

Abstract: The 20 % yttrium doped barium cerate (BCY20) powder has been synthesized by cost effective solution combustion method. The flame temperature measured by pyrometer was 1055°C, less than the adiabatic temperature due to various losses. The phase formation and evolution was studied with TG-DTA and XRD. The carbonate free orthorhombic BCY20 phase was obtained upon calcination at 900°C. The microstructure of the powders and sintered pellet was examined through scanning electron microscopy. The vibrational mode at 3… Show more

“…Measurements were taken in synthetic air in the temperature range 250-700°C. At these conditions ionic-hole transport occurs in Y-doped BaCeO 3 with the activation energy E a of this total conductivity about 0.7-0.8 eV [32,33]. Thus, the conductivity results for single-phase BaCe 0.9 Y 0.1 O 3-d stay in general agreement with the literature data and the total conductivity observed is the result of oxide ion conductivity via oxygen vacancies and hole conductivity.…”

“…We have compared the conductivity of the BCY + 2NiO electrolyte with that of the BCY electrolytes reported by other groups, which is shown in the Supplementary Table S2. It should be noted that the conductivity of the BCY + 2NiO electrolyte in our case can be comparable to that of these BCY electrolytes [21,[32][33][34]. It should be noted that the conductivity of BCY + 2NiO sintered at 1400 • C is higher than that of the BCY electrolytes sintering at higher temperatures, indicating that adding NiO can enhance the conductivity and reduce the sintering temperature of the BCY electrolytes.…”

“…The introduction of Y into cerium position in BaCeO 3 leads to the creation of the oxygen ion vacancies which result in oxygen ion conductivity in inert and dry atmospheres. However, in higher temperatures, hole conductivity may also be observed [23]. In water or hydrogen-containing atmospheres, the proton conductivity appears.…”

“…The calculated values stay in agreement with the literature data. The activation energy of proton conductivity is reported to be 0.5-0.6 eV [26,27], and for oxide ion conductivity, the activation energy is about 0.75-0.8 eV [23]. The effect of materials' microstructure is reflected in the values of E a .…”
