Structural optimal hybrid control strategies employing dynamic dual units: inerter and spring

Abstract: The concepts of optimal hybrid control strategies in the time and frequency domains are proposed herein. The time‐domain optimal hybrid control (also called GangGang strategy) consists of two dynamic units, an inerter and a spring, which work with different force mechanisms at different time phases of vibrations. The inerter acts on the structure when the vibration phase is accelerated, whereas the spring works when the structure deviates from its initial position. The combination of the two piecewise working … Show more

“…The analysis results showed the structural responses from the hysteretic damping model can differ considerably compared with the viscous damping model under earthquake excitations. Liang et al 40 proposed optimal hybrid control strategies in time and frequency domains to study the control performance of a SDOF system with the application of inerter-based devices. The analysis results presented the evaluation of the reduction of the peak resonance response of the proposed primary system, and the inerter-based device can freely be turned on or off according to the subjected external loadings.…”

“…33,34 The authors mainly focus on the research of clutching inertia devices in seismic structural systems. 28,[35][36][37] Compared with the traditional inerter, the advantages of the clutching inertia dampers are: (1) In terms of construction, the clutch mechanism has mechanical advantages and can avoid considerable destructive impacts on both the structure and the transmission system of the device caused by the switching of structural motion states when suffering a large inertia (resulting from deceleration inertia). 9 This is crucial for the reliable and stable operation of the device under highfrequency excitations.…”

“…Inerter-based shock absorption devices and models have attracted significant interest in structural vibration control. [1][2][3][4][5][6] In the early 1990s, some control devices with a structure similar to that of an inerter have been proposed and studied. 7,8 Until 2002, the concept of inerter was first proposed by Smith.…”
