“…By analogy with the shock wave theory for a bar made from a material with a convex stress-strain curve, it was conjectured that the plastic loading front in a ring system propagates as a plane 'shock' wave. Reid et al [5] constructed a one-dimensional structural 'shock' theory and the predicted behaviour was found to agree well with experimental observations. The same model was also used successfully to study the behaviour of ring systems with free distal ends by Reddy et al [6].…”

“…The effects of inertia on the initiation and propagation of deformation through these systems are key factors in the dynamic enhancement of the operative forces generated under dynamic conditions compared with their behaviour under quasi-static loading [4]. The progression of deformation in a one-dimensional ring (type I) system undergoing impact along the line of centres of the rings has been studied systematically, both experimentally and analytically, by Reid et al [5] and Reddy et al [6]. They found that the elastic precursor plays a key role in the initiation of deformation of the ring elements and its subsequent deformation was affected by incident and reflected plastic 'structural shock waves'.…”

“…Despite the limited open reports on the impact behaviour of single circular rings, Reid and co-workers [9][10][11][12] conducted a series of experimental and analytical studies on the impact behaviour of a chain of metal rings by using drop weight and sledge apparatus. They aimed at understanding the inertia effect when the ring systems were subjected to end impact and examination of a plastic shock model.…”

“…Properties of cellular materials have been the subject of many studies 37 (Reid et al (1983), Stronge and Shim (1987), Reid and Peng (1997), Desh- of thin-walled metal tubes were carried out by Stronge and Shim (1987). The outline of this paper is as follows.…”
