As the country with the world's largest population, China is facing great challenges in managing chronic noncommunicable diseases, prevention, and control of major infectious diseases and coping with the health and medical care of an aging population. Hence, there is an urgent need for the development of new approaches based on scientific discoveries emerging from medical research. The application of translational research has enormous potential for addressing these challenging clinical needs. Fundamental research applied to drug discovery and delivery, biomarkers for medical decision-making, and device development are just three areas which are showing significant growth potential in advancing the care of patients on a large scale. China has unique advantages in translational medical research. For instance, there are plenty of patients with diseases in need of new approaches to prevention and treatment. Moreover, because the Ministry of Health (MOH) of the People's Republic of China has a major role in mandating treatment practices in more than 90% of hospitals in China, there is an integrated managerial approach for building an efficient platform of translational medical research. China will take the strategies of medical discovery implementation, fundamental platform construction, national resource integration, and research group management to progressively establish a national biobank of clinical resources and the national centers of translational medicine. The goal is to thoroughly integrate national resources, and achieve complementary collaboration to form an 'application-education-research synchronized system' for an independent, innovative, and sustainable model linked to the development of translational medical research.China makes up 1/5 of the world's population. Consequently, its health and medical care play a crucial role in the development of global medical care. While China has achieved great progress in the past three decades, it still faces tremendous pressure and many challenges in health and medical care.
