Structural requirements of research tissue banks derived from standardized project surveillance

Abstract: Tissue banks constitute decisive and rate-limiting resource and technology platforms for basic and translational biomedical research, notably in the area of cancer. Thus, it is essential to plan and structure tissue banking and allocate resources according to research needs, but essential requirements are still incompletely defined. The tissue bank of the National Center of Tumor Diseases Heidelberg (NCT) was founded with the intention to provide tissues of optimal quality and to prioritize the realization of … Show more

“…It is therefore crucial to select the appropriate biomaterial and to choose suitable methodological conditions for quality control. This implies that exit controls of tissue samples or derivatives have to be performed according to the needs of each individual project [13,14]. As a consequence, the primary diagnosis and specific tumor properties have to be confirmed and tissue vitality as well as tumor content should be specified.…”

“…Transparency is achieved by standardized project management which involves the following steps ( Fig. 2): project application, approval of projects, project processing up to delivery of biomaterial, tracking of projects with regard to biomaterial and service quality, and last but not least, survey of publications as indicator of project performance [21,14].…”

“…Seit Etablierung der Tumordatenbank und der Gewebebank des NCT konnten bis Mitte 2014 mehr als 1500 klinische und grundlagenwissenschaftliche Forschungsprojekte durch die Gewebebank des NCT realisiert werden [11]. Auf Basis der urologischen Tumordatenbank wurden seit 1995 insgesamt 144 wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen bearbeitet [15].…”

“…2 The construction of a basic platform: building a national standard for management and integration of clinical resource samples, electronic medical records, and health research data in order to support translational medical research. Subsequent steps for moving forward will be the formation of national mechanisms for sharing information and other resources [4][5][6][7][8][9]. 3 The integration of national resources: since 2009, more than 40 translational medical centers have been established.…”
