Structural Stability of Well-Being Factors Across Age and Gender, and Development of Scales of Well-Being Unbiased for Age and Gender

Abstract: Well-being, life satisfaction, morale, or affect valence is often used as an outcome in studies of adult life. Many instruments are available, and choice among them is difficult. There is need for information regarding the structure underlying what they measure and, in view of rising interest in adult-span models and investigations, for instruments that are unbiased with respect to age. Analysis of the items in several instruments showed four factors that seem to define the dimensions underlying these measures… Show more

“…Researchers CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN MEASUREMENT have recognized the need to check for equivalence across groups at this level by examining factor loadings (for examples in well-being research, see Carp and Carp, 1983;Liang and Bollen, 1985;Liang et al, 1986Liang et al, , 1987Blais et al, 1989;Arrindell et al, 1991;Pavot et al, 1991;Shevlin and Bunting, 1994). In structural equation modeling, factor loadings are the regression coefficients for predicting item responses from the latent variable.…”

“…The invariance of the dimensional structure and the relationships between the latent variables it measures are central attributes of an instrument [23,24] . These measurement properties can be investigated using straightforward confirmatory factor analytic techniques.…”

“…Amongst psychometric properties, it is important to test measurement invariance to explore whether the AARC concept is interpreted consistently in the same way across different population groups (for example, de ned by gender, level of education, or age) (12,17). Estimated reliable comparisons of AARC scores among groups can, therefore, be potentially calculated (18)(19)(20)(21). Regarding the AARC questionnaires, measurement invariance has so far been tested only for the AARC-10 SF in relation to different age groups (1).…”
