Structural Studies of Ribosomal Proteins

Abstract: Crystal and solution structures of fourteen ribosomal proteins from thermophilic bacteria have been determined during the last decade. This paper reviews structural studies of ribosomal proteins from Thermus thermophilus carried out at the Institute of Protein Research (Pushchino, Russia) in collaboration with the University of Lund (Lund, Sweden) and the Center of Structural Biochemistry (Karolinska Institute, Huddinge, Sweden). New experimental data on the crystal structure of the ribosomal protein L30 from … Show more

“…Crystallographic studies of ribosomes proceed at various levels of complexity. Several crystal structures of individual r‐proteins and rRNA fragments have been determined over the past years (for reviews see Moore, 1998; Nikonov et al ., 1998). The next phase will ascertain the relative orientations of the components, and the first complex of an r‐protein with a cognate rRNA fragment has recently been solved (Conn et al ., 1999; Wimberly et al ., 1999).…”

“…8 and 9). Mapping the rRNA binding sites of ribosomal proteins is a prerequisite for the structural analysis of RNA-protein complexes, which might be as important for the determination of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the ribosome as the 3D structures of isolated proteins (10,11) and rRNA fragments (12). The latter were fitted into the ribosomal structure and played a prominent role for the interpretation of ribosomal 3D maps determined by cryo-electron microscopy or x-ray analysis (13)(14)(15)(16)(17).…”
