Structure-activity relationship of synthetic pheromone components in sex communication of click beetles (Coleoptera, Elateridae)

Abstract: It has been shown earlier that various geranyl and (E,E)-farnesyl esters are major components of natural sex pheromones of click beetles,Agriotes. In addition, some isomeric terpene esters have an inhibiting or synergistic influence upon the sex communication of some species ofAgriotes. In this paper the influence of synthetic terpene esters in pheromone compositions on the sex communication of differentAgriotes species occurring in different climatic zones has been studied. The relationship between the biolog… Show more

“…(see, e.g. borg ‐ karlson et al., 1988; S iirde et al., 1993; Y atsynin et al., 1996). In preliminary studies we were able to show the presence of this compound in pheromone gland extracts of A.sordidus (unpublished; detailed analyses will be reported in full elsewhere).…”

“…By monitoring the occurrence of click beetle adults it may be possible to forecast the occurrence of wireworms and thus to determine the necessity of insecticide applications on a given field, resulting in reduced use of soil insecticide. Pheromone trapping would be an applicable method of monitoring, since females of adult click beetles emit long‐range sex pheromones, and for several pest species the chemical identity of the pheromone has been elucidated (B org ‐K arlson et al., 1988; S iirde et al., 1993; Y atsynin et al., 1996). Until now field trapping tests with synthetic pheromones have been largely conducted on click beetle populations in the European part of the former Soviet Union (Y atsynin and L ebedeva , 1984; Y atsynin et al., 1986; K udryavtsev et al., 1993).…”

“…Pheromone gland extracts of A. lineatus contain large amounts of geranyl octanoate (Borg-Karlson et al 1988;Kudryavtsev et al 1993;Siirde et al 1993) and only trace amounts of the related geranyl butanoate (Yatsynin et al 1996a;Tóth et al 2003). A blend of 10:1 geranyl octanoate/ geranyl butanoate was found to be effective in field trapping of A. lineatus in many European countries (Tóth et al 2003).…”

“…Evidence for the existence of long‐range sex pheromones within this taxonomic group have been demonstrated for a number of species from different continents 4–7. Most studies on this subject deal with Euroasian spp and originate from scientists from the former Soviet Union 8–10…”
