Structure and function of “metalloantibiotics”

Abstract: Although most antibiotics do not need metal ions for their biological activities, there are a number of antibiotics that require metal ions to function properly, such as bleomycin (BLM), streptonigrin (SN), and bacitracin. The coordinated metal ions in these antibiotics play an important role in maintaining proper structure and/or function of these antibiotics. Removal of the metal ions from these antibiotics can cause changes in structure and/or function of these antibiotics. Similar to the case of "metallopr… Show more

“…Antimicrobial activity of polymer is commonly achieved by adding metal particles [5,6,7], and also organic compounds [8,9]. Although ZnO is well known as antibacterial [10,11,12,13], there are no precedent on the study of antimicrobial activity in thermoplastic polymers.…”

“…7,9,10,59 It should be mentioned that some authors support the idea that metal atoms are involved in the inhibitions mechanism of Gyrase by quinolones. For this reason, quinolones are also known as metallo-antibiotics, 60 and different studies on…”

“…Favorably improved optical, electrical, magnetic, and pharmaceutical [5][6][7] properties of these nanocomposites make them potential candidates for catalysts, semiconductors, photo-voltic devices and medical applications for diagnosis and treatment [8,9] compared to bulk materials. In early period nanoparticles were synthesized in few milligram amount using toxic bulk organic solvents in inverted micelles for academic purposes [10].…”
